Vóór het melken de uiers behandelen met desinfectiemiddel is nodig om besmetting van de melk te voorkomen. Het ontsmetten is dus belangrijk in het kader van voedselveiligheid. Maar dit is zeker niet het enige moment waarop goede uierverzorging gewenst is. Vanuit dierengezondheid behandelen de meeste agrariërs hun vee ook na de melkafgifte. En ze maken de uiers bovendien op willekeurig andere momenten schoon met speciaal daarvoor bestemde reinigingsmiddelen.
